What To Do When You Are Afraid

Psalm 34:4  I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.

Fear is a part of life.  Some fears are minimal, but others can be debilitating.  Regardless, when fear comes upon us, we should seek the Lord.  The Hebrew word translated “sought” has a range of meanings including “resort to”, “enquire of”, “consult with”, and “seek with care”.  These meanings convey dependence upon God rather than ourselves.  It is saying, “I need help.”

When God’s child calls upon Him, He hears.  We can rest assured that our petition will be heard.  There are a number of passages which demonstrate this fact.  Here are a few:

Numbers 20:16  And when we cried unto the LORD, he heard our voice…

Deuteronomy 26:7  And when we cried unto the LORD God of our fathers, the LORD heard our voice, and looked on our affliction, and our labour, and our oppression:

Psalm 6:9  The LORD hath heard my supplication; the LORD will receive my prayer.

Psalm 17:6   I have called upon thee, for thou wilt hear me, O God: incline thine ear unto me, and hear my speech.

Psalm 66:19-20  But verily God hath heard me; he hath attended to the voice of my prayer.  20 Blessed be God, which hath not turned away my prayer, nor his mercy from me.

Jeremiah 29:12  Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.

Jonah 2:2  And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice.

Philippians 4:6-7  Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.  7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Not only does God hear us, but He acts on our behalf.  The psalmist said, “[he] delivered me from all of my fears.” (Psalm 34:4)  God takes care of His own.  The Bible is replete with examples of God’s loving care over His people.  The principle is captured in these two verses:

Psalm 81:7  Thou calledst in trouble, and I delivered thee…

Psalm 107:6  Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses.

When difficulties come and fears overwhelm you, seek God and He will deliver you from those fears.  It is interesting that it does not say He will take the cause of the fears away, but He will remove our fears.  There are some things that we need to go through in life, some of which we do not want to experience.  However, God often uses adverse circumstances to strengthen us and prepare us for greater challenges.  Through it all, He wants us to depend on Him and when we do, our fears will vanish.
