The Fall – Part 2

This brought about a number of behaviors. First, they were ashamed. They knew they were naked and immediately tried to cover up their shame. Before this, they had no shame because they were in a holy relationship with God and each other. That was now gone. This is why we fell shame even today. This is also why we wear clothing, even where the weather is temperate. We naturally feel shame because of our sin nature.

Second, they hid. They knew that they were responsible for their actions. They understood that there would be a price to pay. So they hid from it. This happens today when people sin. We try to run from the consequences. However, nobody can hide from God. (Psalm 139:7-8)

Third, they blamed others. Adam blamed Eve. Eve blamed the serpent. They tried to pass blame, but they were still guilty for their own personal sin. We like to make excuses and transfer blame to others. However, we all need to take a look in the mirror and accept the responsibility for our own sin. Whether they realized it or not, they were admitting their guilt when each of them said, “I did eat.” (Genesis 3:12-13)

So they were confronted with their sin. They could not hide. They were responsible for their sin. That is the problem we all have. However, Jesus Christ provides the solution. “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)
