The Kind of People You Want on Your Side

When I was a kid, we would often play games where we would have to pick teams.  We would elect two captains who would begin to take turns picking who they wanted on their team.  The picking was often strategic.  For example, the captain not only wanted good players, he also wanted team members who would be loyal to the team and would follow his leadership. Who would you want on your side?

When Saul was king of Israel and after he had rebelled, God told Samuel to anoint David to be king.  Saul, being who he was, continued in his rebellion and tried on a number of occasions to kill David.  David stays on the run during this time and gathers an army of followers.  These men help him evade capture and also fight the enemies of Israel.  The ultimate goal, however, was to turn the kingdom over to David as God desired.

Our Spiritual Battle

Ephesians 6:10-12 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. 11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.   12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

It is tempting for the Christian to focus on the physical things of life.  Being physical beings, this is natural.  So, we concern ourselves with how we look, maintaining our homes and cars, performing the chores we need to do, etc.  There is nothing wrong with this.  However, human beings also have a spiritual side.  This is where we will find the most difficult areas of our life. Being Holy in an Unholy World

Holiness has become a dying discipline among God’s people.  This is a tragedy and one which should be remedied.  Holiness is the primary theme in the book of Leviticus to the people of Israel and a common theme in the Bible as a whole.  In short, God tells us in His Word, “Be different!  Do not act like everyone else.  You are special to Me.  Be like Me.” Continue reading →

But I Don’t Feel Like It

“But I don’t feel like it!”  This is a common excuse I hear from my children on a regular basis when I ask them to do something.  However, it is an excuse that adults often use as well.  In the Christian life there are a number of practices we might call “Christian disciplines”.  These include prayer, Bible study, worship, and witnessing.  Too often we neglect these disciplines for no better reason than we just don’t feel like practicing them.  Continue reading →
